When you combine her writing and directing — as well as her acting skills — it justifies a healthy amount of awe. Her feature-length directing debut was Away from Her, adapted from an Alice Munro short story. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay (for Polley) and Best Actress for Julie Christie (who won a Golden Globe). Then she directed Take This Waltz with Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen, followed by a documentary about her own family secrets, Stories We Tell, which won the WGA Award for Best Documentary. Interesting fact: at 17, Sarah reached out to the author Margaret Atwood (you know, the woman who wrote The Handmaid’s Tale) and tried to get the rights to Alias Grace. 20 years later she wrote every episode and produced the Netflix mini series. The point: yes, dreams do come true.
